Donald McEachin died Monday at age 61, weeks after earning a fourth term representing Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and the Tri-Cities.

Congressman Donald McEachin's passing away was unexpected, but his illness had been ongoing for some time.

The successful therapy he received eight years ago for colon cancer had left him with lingering side effects, which he had been experiencing.

Tara Rountree, the congressman's chief of staff, said they were "devastated" by Donald McEachin's death.

"For years, we have seen him fight bravely and win against the side effects of his colorectal cancer, which he had in 2013." said Rountree.

The people of Virginia's 4th congressional district lost a hero of their causes and a true leader tonight.

McEachin, who served for a total of nine years in the Senate after having previously been elected to the House of Delegates twice.

On November 8, he had just completed his second victory over the Republican candidate Leon Benjamin.

The month of January was chosen to mark the beginning of Congressman Donald McEachin's fourth term.
